“The current war in Ukraine reminds many people in Hong Kong of their historic struggle against Chinese encroachment in 2019. At that time, months-long community screenings of a documentary featuring the Maidan resistance inspired Hong Kongers to fight for their own freedom. But unlike Russian military aggression, Beijing’s “global China” project deploys other mechanisms of power. Using Hong Kong as an example, this talk analyzes the major modalities of power constituting “global China,” and traces the arc of local and transnational resistance it has provoked.”
