How has Hong Kong's visual arts landscape evolved, and where is it headed next? In a world of dramatic changes, is it even possible to answer such questions? Join us for an incisive discussion between two of the city's most influential art leaders.
Drawing on decades of experience, Cosmin Costinas and Yeewan Koon reflect on Hong Kong's place in the global art world—from the exhibition practices of cultural institutions, to the shifting entanglements of art, society, and institutional change. Moderated by Winnie Wong, this session offers a thoughtful look at the recent past, the turbulent present, and the near future of a city and world in flux.

About the Speakers
Yeewan Koon
Yeewan Koon is Associate Dean (Global) and Chair of the Department of Art History at the University of Hong Kong. She is the author of Nara Yoshitomo (translated into Japanese and Korean), A Defiant Brush: Su Renshan and the Politics of Painting in 19th Century Guangdong, A Chinese Canton? Painting the Local in Export Art, and Where is Hong Kong Now?, as well as "Where Are We Now? M+ and the Uncertain Future of Hong Kong," among other publications. Her current research includes co-editing the 19th century volume of The Cultural History of Asian Art Project (Courtauld Institute) and developing the Hong Kong Art Timeline website. She has been awarded a Fulbright Senior Fellowship, an American Council of Learned Societies Fellowship, and visiting scholarships at Cambridge and Columbia Universities. An active critic and curator in contemporary art, Koon serves on the boards of several art institutions.
Cosmin Costinas
Cosmin Costinas (b. 1982, Romania) is a curator and writer based in Hong Kong. He is the Co-Artistic Director of the 9th Yokohama Triennial. He was the senior Curator of Exhibition Practices at the Haus der Kulturen der Welt, HKW, Berlin (2022-2025); Co-Artistic Director of the 24th Biennale of Sydney (2024); Director of Para Site, Hong Kong (2011-2022); Artistic Director of Kathmandu Triennale 2077 (2022); co-curator of the Romanian Pavilion at the 59th Venice Biennale (2022); Guest Curator of Dakar Biennale 2018; Guest Curator at the Dhaka Art Summit (2018); Co-curator of the 10th Shanghai Biennale (2014); Curator of BAK, Utrecht (2008-2011); Co-curator of the 1st Ural Industrial Biennial, Ekaterinburg (2010); and Editor of documenta 12 magazines, Vienna/Kassel (2005–2007). He has also guest curated numerous exhibitions at institutions around the world and has edited and contributed his writing to numerous books, magazines, and exhibition catalogs and has taught and lectured at different universities and institutions.
Winnie Wong
Winnie Wong is an art historian with a special interest in fakes, forgeries, and counterfeits. Her work explores authorship, property, and likeness through interdisciplinary inquiry, while her research is animated by the global reach of artists in and from the cities of Hong Kong, Guangzhou, and Shenzhen. Winnie holds a S.M.Arch.S. and a Ph.D. from History, Theory + Criticism at MIT and she was elected a Junior Fellow of the Harvard Society of Fellows. She is currently Professor of Rhetoric at University of California, Berkeley.
